Back to School Night at Trevista at Horace Mann was a momentous occasion as our community gathered to celebrate the official opening of our brand-new mini-pitch. Created to give our kids and families a safe, welcoming place to play, connect, and stay active right here in Northwest Denver, the new field is a direct reflection of our school’s commitment to providing an extraordinary experience for every student.
During the event, Principal Jessica Mullins reflected on Trevista’s ongoing journey of excellence, noting that eleven years ago the school painted its doors blue to represent the limitless potential of its students. Today, Destination Blue isn’t just where we were trying to go – it is who we are, with Trevista standing as the highest-performing Title I school in Denver Public Schools. Our students have achieved incredible academic milestones, ranking first in Denver Public Schools and first in the entire state of Colorado for literacy growth, as well as third in the district and eighth statewide for Math growth. As an innovation school, Trevista achieves these outcomes through small, deliberate deviations from the norm executed consistently and well, driven by the belief that where a child lives should never dictate the quality of their education.
The story of the new mini-pitch began five years ago when physical education teacher Mr. P recognized our students’ deep love for soccer and their need for a dedicated space to play, applying for a grant through the U.S. Soccer Foundation. That vision was brought to life this year when Vita Coco generously stepped up to sponsor and construct the field. When students have a rich, joyful environment at school, it directly enhances their academic success, proving that education truly transforms lives.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the U.S. Soccer Foundation and Vita Coco for their dedication to expanding access to sports, health, and opportunity for young people. Special thanks go out to the Colorado Rapids and Denver Summit for joining the celebration, as well as DPS Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero and DPS Board Member Marlene De La Rosa. Most importantly, thank you to our Trevista parents and families for your continued trust and partnership as we look forward to seeing our students thrive both on and off the pitch.
