All children are expected to report home immediately after dismissal from school. Teachers will contact parents by phone if children are kept more than fifteen minutes after school.
DRESS CODE / UNIFORMS
Appropriate dress is very important to achieve success in school. Appropriate dress creates an atmosphere of success and sets the tone for acceptable behavior in school. It helps students feel more equal to each other and eliminates behavior problems like teasing and put- downs. This, in turn, increases an individual child's self-confidence. Appropriate dress is also a good preparation for children who will eventually be entering the work force. We want your child to be successful in school. In your preparations for school each morning, please take the time to make sure that your child has followed dress code for Trevista at Horace Mann.
All students are expected to dress in the following manner:
- Collared, sleeved (short sleeves or long), solid color polo shirt in the designated grade level colors.
- Jeans, black or khaki pants, shorts, or skirts.
- Pants that are size appropriate
- No sagging pants

- No heels.
DISMISSAL DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
When you wish to have your child leave school before the end of the day, please come in person to the office and sign your child out. Teachers will not release a pupil without office authorization. No child will be sent home unless the contact person who is listed on the emergency card has come to the office and signed the pupil out. Please keep the emergency.
EARLY DISMISSAL DAYS
Every FRIDAY, Trevista ECE-8 at Horace Mann staff will observe an Early Dismissal Day. School will be in session from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Breakfast & lunch will be served on these days.
ILLNESS OF A CHILD
If a child becomes ill or is injured at school, office staff will contact the person listed on the emergency card and supervise the child until he she is picked up. In case of emergency, we will dial 911. Please keep your child emergency card information updated.
PLAYGROUND
The playground is supervised daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. Please do not send children to school prior to that time. To provide a safe environment, children should know the areas in which they are to play and the procedures governing activities. We direct children to leave school directly at 4:00 p.m. unless they are involved in after school activities. There is no supervision on the playground after school. Children should check in immediately with parents or sitter when they arrive home.
BREAKFAST/ LUNCH
Breakfast is served free for all students each morning 7:35 am - 8:15 am. Children who eat breakfast should enter the lunchroom at 7:30a.m. or no later than 8:10 p.m. ADULT SUPERVISION IN THE LUNCHROOM IS NOT PROVIDED PRIOR TO 7:30 am.
For children who spend a full day at school, a hot plate lunch with beverage costs $1.40. Milk (white or chocolate) may be purchased at $.35 per half pint. Reduced-price lunch is $.40. Prices are subject to change.
VISITS AND PARENT CONFERENCE
Parents are welcome to visit at any time. Please sign in at the office before visiting classrooms. If you wish to meet with a teacher, a message will be given to the teacher to contact you for a convenient time. Parent conferences will be scheduled during the year.
VOLUNTEERING
Parents are encouraged to volunteer at Trevista ECE-8 at Horace Mann. Please contact Rose Kundert, the parent liaison, and look for volunteer opportunities in the monthly newsletter. You are a valuable part of your child's education and success in school.
MEDICATIONS
If possible, all medication should be given at home although prescribed medication can be given to a pupil at school. If the child must receive medication during school hours, the following procedure must be followed: a permission form with physician name, dosage and time to be given must be signed by a parent and by the physician as well. A note with this information may be sent the first day with the child. All medicine must be distributed from the health office. No employee of Denver Public Schools shall prescribe or give an unauthorized medication to a pupil. It is an approved procedure in the school for an employee to confiscate pills, tablets or a bottle of medicine from a child until circumstances are known. Cough drops are considered a medication.
VALUABLES/MONEY
Children should NOT bring large sums of money or valuable articles to school. Radios, skateboards, calculators and cell phones are a few examples. Toys of any type are discouraged at school. Our primary purpose is to educate each child. Toys detract from learning and will be confiscated until retrieved by the child's parent or guardian.
CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES
No student will be able to use cell phones, iPods or other music players or video games at school at any time. We expect students to keep these devices in their backpack or locker. They are not for use during school or on school grounds.
If a student is seen with ear buds, a cell phone or electronic device, it will be confiscated for the day and returned at the end of that day by the teacher or staff member who confiscated it, unless other arrangements are made.
Refusal to give the requested device to any adult staff member will result in a referral to the office and suspension.
CONTACTING SCHOOL
Except in extreme emergencies, students and teachers are not called to the phone. Phone calls to the classroom disrupt learning. Office staff will take messages, or you may leave a message on the teacher's voice mail. After 3:45 p.m. the office staff will transfer a call to the classroom for an emergency only.
If you have any concerns or are in need of clarification or additional information, please call the school office at 720-423-9800. We encourage you to communicate with us regularly.
LOST AND FOUND
The area for lost and found items is near the office. Small items are held inside the office. Children may check the lost and found during the school day with a teacher's permission. It is very important and helpful to have all your child's personal items marked with his/her name. Items properly marked facilitate quicker return and assist in validating ownership. Parents are asked to use good judgment in letting their children wear expensive jackets which may be lost. Trevista ECE-8 at Horace Mann will not be responsible for any lost items.
SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT
Please confer with your child's teacher regarding needed school supplies. At times during the year pupils will take library and textbooks home. Pupils are responsible for such materials and will be fined for lost or damaged materials.
EXCURSIONS
As a part of our instructional program, teachers plan excursions away from the building. These excursions sometimes require a small admission fee. If a child cannot pay, there is a limited school fund which may be used. Parents are often invited to accompany a class at the teachers request. We urge you to participate if your schedule allows. Written notice will be sent home by the teacher. Excursion permits are signed by parents at the time of pupil registration. The form is included in the registration packet.
CHILD ABUSE
School personnel are required by state law to follow up on all cases of alleged child abuse. It is not the responsibility of the school to determine whether or not a child's injury is considered abuse. The Denver Department of Social Services makes this decision. It is the schools responsibility to report injuries that may be the result of alleged abuse.
STORMY DAYS
When the weather conditions prevent children from being outside, they will be permitted to enter the Lunchroom at regular supervision time 8:00 a.m. In case of a severe storm, schools will be in session. Closings are announced on radio and TV. Parents are URGED to use their own judgment in sending children to school on bad weather days. Radio station KOA 850 AM will broadcast school closing information.
COLLABORATIVE SCHOOL COMMITTEE (CSC)
The CSC is a group of parents, staff, principal, and community members who serve as decision makers to benefit the students at Trevista ECE-8 at Horace Mann. Decisions made by the committee ensure equity toward a quality education, monitor student achievement and promote community partnerships. The meetings are open to the public.
PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE (PAC)
Each school providing services to 20 or more English language learners has a parent advisory committee. All parents of English language learners are welcome to express concerns and review the English Language Acquisition program at Trevista ECE-8 at Horace Mann. Topics such as student assessment, parental involvement, and the rights and responsibilities of parents are discussed.
HOMEWORK POLICY
Homework provides an opportunity to develop good study habits, learn to use time wisely, reinforce skills and concepts, develop personal responsibility, and to use home and community resources. Therefore, as a matter of Trevista ECE-8 at Horace Mann CSC policy, homework is mandatory. Each teacher will determine an individual homework plan and will communicate this plan to his/ her students and parents.
PARENT PARKING
For the safety of all of our students, please do not double park on Navajo Street at arrival or dismissal time. Do not motion for your children to cross in the middle of the street when dropping them off or picking them up. The parking lot is not to be used for drop off and pick up of children.
